The story was a short excerpt from the time I went to live with him and my aunt Mary (Davis) Garret on a dairy farm they had back in the 70's. Their kindness helped me get through a very traumatic time in my life and I know I will be forever grateful to them for that. It and another story of my childhood was submitted for publication back in the late 2000's, and I am sorry to say it was the other that was accepted. So the rights of 'Hardscrabble...' came back to me and 'Cane Pole Logic' was published in its stead.
Now news has reached my ears that my aunt Mary just recently succumbed to illness after fighting the good fight. It was made known to me that she held fast to the very end and left me wishing I could have at least been able to say good bye. So this entry finds me hoping that their eternity, whatever 'heaven' is for them, is a great deal like the one they created for me, forty plus years back, on that hardscrabble farm.
