I have two author friends that just got published, Mary Gottschalk and Carol Bodensteiner. Both of these fine writers attended class with me last year at the Iowa Summer Writing Festival, and now have some good stories on the market. Check them out in the calendar section. Both stories are worth a read!
The agent query goes on as I try to find someone to represent my international adventure romance, When Walls Fall Down. On top of that, I just completed seven days of classes at this year's University of Iowa Summer Writing Festival -- two days on writing Gothic Horror writing and five on writing short stories. My teachers Wayne Johnson and Jonathan Blum were very bright and knowledgeable graduates of the Writers Workshop, both very good at what they do. There was a lot of stress. I had assignments every day plus stories to critique, plus... plus... Took me right back my college days. However I came away a lot smarter, as they say. (You know, those people who are always "just saying"?)
You know that feeling you get if you have ever put together a jigsaw puzzle? That singular moment when you discover several pieces that all fit together nicely after having searched for what seemed like hours? It was just like that. Wondering what was missing from my writing, trying to find pieces of knowledge that could improve my short stories by fitting together nicely. Just so I could give you, my readers, an entertaining and memorable read!
Sometimes it is just a matter of finding the right people to play with.
